Damn, that fat bastard deserved a more gruesome death. I knew Rhaptalia wouldn't kill him, but still, what a cop out.

Why the hell were there Swedish singing in between 18:00 and like 20:48 in a japanese anime?

Here's the lyrics i heard in the song as well as a translation for you non swedish weebs

Original lyrics
‘’En annan tid, då allt fanns kvar inuti mitt bröst, det är allt som jag. Sitt fjälla fall *Character talking over the song* en polare, under din vrå och jag kan höra hur syrsan spelar. *Character talking over the song* ett annat liv, en bortglömd stad som ingen minns utom jag. *Character talking over the song* i varje träd finns sången kvar och jag kan känna hur skogen gråter.’’

My translation of the lyrics
‘’Another time, when everything were in my breast, that’s all I am. It’s scaling fall *character talking over the song* a buddy, under your corner and i can hear how the mantis plays. *Character talking over the song* another life, a forgotten city that no one remembers except me. *Character talking over the song* in every tree, the song still exist and i can feel how the forest is crying.’’

I was thinking the same thing! I was so confused as a Swede to have an anime use a song sung in Swedish as an OST

We could learn more about Raphtalia and her past. So loosing parents was only an overture to next tragedies that were to appear in Raphtalia's life. This episode was soo emotional and sad. I'm glad they managed to save at least several demi-humans. Too bad Raphtalia's best friend from childhood years didn't make it. :( I'm glad that Raphtalia found Naofumi, Filo and Melty on her way. That way she can be happy after all those hardships she went through.

extremely disappointed about the fat guy.
The manga version was 1000% better...
(FYI: In the manga raphtalia immediatelly stabs him in the shoulder, then they have the talk and ultimately raphtalia stabs him with the magic sword, actively pushing him out the window with naofumi rescuing her from falling)
The rest of the episode was great

And. AGAIN. The Manga is NOT the source!

My most favorite episode of Shield Hero so far.

I always liked Raphtalia, but during the last episodes the focus switched to other characters - sadly - and after a few weeks of a break I had no more positiv feelings. During this episode... I started to freaking love her as character.

Raph had such a heartbreaking past... not only past but also present since she couldnt help her friends until now. She had to bear all those sad and heartbreaking feelings with her... all of the time... during the whole time while she traveled with the Shield Hero.

The music was so emotional, fitting and beautiful.

The way how Raphs past has been presented and executed was amazing. Walking down the stairs to jail step by step.. having flashbacks... hearing beautiful and sad melodies... and getting to know the whole picture.

I loved how that asshole died cause of the dragon... deserved way to die for him.

I think that Shield Hero is going to change somehow aswell. He just saw how bad the Demis got treated and how much Raph had to suffer. He knows that he is needed. And he has got a mission... to save all of them. To help his friends. To fight for the weak.

Another point I want to mention is how good I felt while the Demis talked about the Shield Hero and how he is going to save them. Raphs friend even wanted to marry him.

I am pretty curious how this show will end. Will Raph marry Shield Hero? Or is Shield Hero going to leave and everyone will think about the only one true hero saving them?

Hoping to see some more episodes like this. Felt like the beginning of this show. Dark... sad... alot of hatred... but somehow there was hope. Thats the reason why I have started to like this show. Missed it somehow during the last episodes, but this episode was perfect.

Geez, this episode almost got me. It kept tugging at my heartstrings. I'm so glad that Keel managed to survive though. I don't think I'd be able to handle Raphtalia losing two close friends. Honestly, I love her so much... It's a shame that she and her friends had to suffer because of their dysfunctional society...

Anyway, this episode is another favorite of mine. I think I need to take a break and recover so I can move onto the next one without as much sadness.

Maybe it's just me but I really appreciate the detail of the little flag. Now I understand why Raphtalia was so amazed with the one Naofumi made for her during the first episodes.

Honestly, it was the typical sad backstory episode but in terms of execution, I have to say it was better than the previous ones... well, until that fat noble suddenly appeared almost unharmed after falling from a third floor... what a way to kill the atmosphere but well.

And on a side note, I really wonder if the Queen is even doing something regarding the slavery issue. I honestly would like to see the series focusing on this aspect a bit more in the next episodes since I find it way more interesting than main plot but sadly, it seems it will take a while until Naofumi and co. finally reach her domains.

P.S.: Just nitpicking but after probably years of torture, I would have expected Raphtalia to have a huge pain tolerance yet she couldn't handle it when the fat noble squeezed her "bruise" arm...

Then they came for the Gabi fans, and I did not speak out—

Definitely a weird fight, especially when Idol slipped and felt out of the window. I really thought he was dead. Besides from that a super sad and emotional episode. Raphtalias past was hard to watch. Also the other demis like Keel suffered so much in all that time.

I guess for Melty to see all these things must be something she could never imagine. I'm glad they found survivors like Keel. Tha part with Rifana was so sad my god ;_;

She just wanted to go back to her village and meeting the shield hero.

How in the world did Idol survive? At least that monster he summoned shut his mouth forever, but the situation exacerbated. Hopefully Naofumi and the others can deal with that giant T-Rex.

Man this episode was stupid. Raphtalia saying she won't kill Rabier because she is not like him. But what guarantee is there that he will atone? He might go back to his old ways(had he survived) and continue killing more demi-humans considering slavery is legal. Killing may not be the solution but it should be acceptable for greater good not cast aside like the ultimate evil. I am seriously getting annoyed of this pacifist idealistic crap that writers force upon us in every freaking situation in anime.

At first I didn't notice, but then as time went by I was like, *Is that a Swedish word I just heard?*.
Very bizarre indeed. Why would they even have a random Swedish song in an Isekai set in a medieval parallel world? Maybe because it sounds... foreign? I have no idea. I want to find the lyrics though, because it sounded like a lovesong or something (from the words I could hear, since it wasn't that easy to hear). Well, well, at least Sweden is getting some recognition from Japan, that is always cool.

(If someone finds the song, I would be happy if you shared it, because I want to to hear how well/badly it fits with the moment in the anime).

Here's the lyrics that i heard from the episode

This episode was a joke. Naofumi has been acting like an salty emo 14 year old for 15 eps because oh no he can never trust again after the false rape accusation and the kingdom turning on him- and his hatred and edginess is justified by the narrative. But Raphtalia has been tortured and enslaved- which cannot even compare to Naofumi's bullshit- and not only is she not allowed to kill him and exact revenge but also apparently Naofumi appears as if he has the moral high ground, as if he has the authority to tell her what to do when he's obsessed with vindication for a much lighter reason? Fuck off with this shit.

And that's not even going into how the fat dude is somehow morally despicable for torturing and owning slaves, but Naofumi is obviously good to go because he's the MC and he didn't torture her amirite? He still bought her and supported the system of slave trading. She still had that electric shock in order to be controlled by him. But she *has* to bow down in gratitude and never question his character.

The writer should have just abandoned the idea of adding the topic of slavery if he couldn't handle it maturely and respectfully.

Ugh... I skimmed through a few pages, and I'm mostly seeing the same takes on this. In my opinion, the worst part about this episode is that it completely undermines Raphtalia's emotional growth. It would make so much more sense if she switched places with Rifana in the flashbacks.

I mean where is the heart-wrenching PTSD-riddled child who has night terrors and wets her bed? She's not here. She's nowhere to be seen. Before her parents' death haunted her and filled her with guilt, now she's strong enough to never cry again and lead her people. It just really doesn't make sense.

For all the cliches in this episode, this is the one that really matters and no one is talking about it. This is the most agregious form of bad writing, and none of the critics here have mentioned it. I can stomach the one-off villain. I can stomach the third Loli clone. I can stomach the disconnected emotional reaching through characters we don't care about. But this is truly heartbreaking. Raph and the father-daughter relationship she has with Naofumi is the reason why I liked this show. This episode just ruins that.

I'll finish out the season, but I'm not excited to see what's next anymore.

gonna be real here chief, definitely not feeling this one. It was going good, story was for me at a decent pacing and i was super excited to see Raphtalia's past, but good fucking lord what are these throwaway antagonists, what are with the good awful cliche's this episode????

Literally, this villain felt like such a throw away, like he was purely made for 2 episodes worth then killed off. It felt like the characteristic they gave him was just "evil" thats it, nothing more nothing less, one thing and fuck all. I could name at least one other villain that follows this stupid simple cycle of, doing blatantly evil shit that they see as "a-ok" and brand them as nothing more, act high and mighty when the good guys appear, cower in fear and beg for there life when they get slapped silly, then immediately after continue what they were doing, rinse repeat.

The cliches, the fucking cliches are killing me here, "<i>I won't be any different from you</i>". So tell me, how is killing a man, that for god knows how many years, has been torturing, selling and killing demi-human children for the fun of it and is use to getting his hands soaked in blood, how is killing him making you anything like him? i don't see how sparing him initially had any benefit for them? If anything, not killing him right there an then caused them more problems then fixing them, he obviously wanted them dead regardless of begging for his life, hence attacking Raphtalia right after, or summoning a fucking CGI rendered T-Rex.

Will admit, the Raphtalia past reveal was emotional, did get me in the feels, but it's just what ever that mess beforehand was, was a real buzzkill for me, and her flashback scenes really didn't hit as hard as i thought it would because of this. Either way, a better understanding of her past is a plus, and her character development did feel like an improvement. I found her past to be interesting, and i could sympathise with her to a degree.

CGI T-Rex, oh boy lets see were this goes shall we?

Ah, yeah, like i said, that kuso noble really got a mild and hilarious kind of death, trampled by a dinosaur! Nice shit!

But, that emotional part was truly anticipated. So no more sudden heavy heart sick from me. Its kinda weird that boy ajin still alived, really, after having those long times. Well, left aside the logic behind that, its really helped filling out Raph's missing puzzle, and somehow helped Melty characterization too to get a better understanding against those complete chaos called a kingdom, as expected from what i learnt, before. Still, i am curious about the Queen, so better to hop that dino down asap, and move on completely!

Idk about the next episode where route its led. However, judging by the title, it looks like the next will trying to portray Firo's past? Well, lets see it, then!

Apparently they made some large changes with the material in this episode...

Probably to make Raphtalia just even more perfect (stupid) waifu-bait material. And that was fucking retarded. I'm starting to really hate this show. "Oh no I killed the person who tortured and killed my entire village, how will I ever live with myself?" Really? And the MC asking for forgiveness from Ralph because "it's the right thing to do" and seemingly taking the teacher/mentor role despite not understanding any of what she or the others went through or having really any actual grasp of the situation, that's insulting (done presumably for the sake of wanking off about how "cool" the MC is and his "handle" of the situation to the audience, like with most shitty, cheap Isekai stories). And he really showed a lot of emotion for his close friend while she was in complete distress and confronting her past abuser/torturer... I don't know. I feel like most people in his position would have been uhhhh, upset or maybe angry? At that guy? Maybe. Instead of being otherwise entirely passive... And there's just way too many "evil for the sake of being evil" characters to justify, like that fat old guy just now (who apparently was completely different in the LN and set up at least with some power/high level) who lacked any discernable motive like every other antagonist thus far in this show.

Everything about this show's writing makes me want to hit my head against a wall. I don't even like the main cast anymore, the MC's whole edgy, teenage-angsty schtick got old 5+ episodes ago and is now just cringey, he's entirely 1-note and entirely cliché now, the two lolis have the EXACT same personality (a completely forgettable one at that. They're appeal is that they're cute lolis. That's it.) and I've already spoken on Ralph - she's arguably the most basic one, being the epitome of effortless, lifeless waifu bait and completely unbelievable as any sort of actual person. There's no effort passed that of face value with anything in this show.

Apparently these are just about all routed in deviations from the source and part of me thinks some of it might be down to them trying to appeal to the west with these tropes (at least the "killing you (mr mass child torturer and murderer) will make me as bad as you (even in self defense)" moral turd and the huge change/simplification of Ralphtalia's character for sad otaku appeal) what with this having been made with the west as a targeted demographic due to Crunchyroll's heavy involvement/backing.

I hate the whole "If I kill you I'd be as bad as you" shit, but I guess here it makes sense since Raphtalia has never killed a person.

That honestly made me want to kill myself.
"If I will kill a slave owner who have slave kids that abuse, torture and rape them for eternity, then I'm just like him!!!"
Holy shit that was garbage... and I predicted that it will happen because the anime was so garbage so far.

I dropped the anime at episode 9, now I came back to it and it's still so trash.
That probably was the worsy anime episode I've ever seen in any anime, ever.

This is one of the worse episodes so far for sure. Putting aside the pure evil villain who is not the first to be such in this show, the way that Raphtalia was supposed not to kill him because she wouldn't be pure or something was ridiculous, and the villain surviving the fall and managing to summon a hidden monster was way too unimaginative. The underground prison was also handled a bit weirdly, the corpse of Raphtalia's friend not being disposed of and the weird lines the characters were saying, though it's also not the first time that they speak some really weird stuff, as there was also the few times that Naofumi and Raphtalia had quite a bit of a conversation in the arena and on the ship while everyone was apparently waiting for them to let all of their words and emotions out so that they could continue with their lives.

This episode was ruined in the first ten minutes; I absolutely hate how they used that cheap “oh if you kill him nothing will be solved”. WTF?!?!? If I was apart of a community of people I cared about who were then mercilessly enslaved, abused, dehumanized, etc by this fat noble dude which eventually caused one of my closest friends to perish, I would end his life without a second thought. Like what was that cheap bs; that’s completely ridiculous and unforgivable. As a result of that I literally couldn’t stop laughing at how ridiculous it was and it made the impact of Raphtalias past almost ineffective. That is such stupidity I can’t even fathom how people ended up loving this episode; there’s no justification at all for Raphtalia just doing some dumb emotional monologue and not do SOMETHING. At least in the manga (I heard) she actually acted, but like that’s not heroic at all to not kill some evil piece of shit; that’s just plain stupidity for the sake of “morality”.

That CGI T-Rex being used for the cliffhanger was so bad yet hilarious so fair play. Rest of the episode felt so cheap with how they handled Raphtalia's backstory in the past and her overall reaction, it's SAO-level writing here with the forced misery nature of everything. It's too comical.

Damn, the water works this episode. I really didn't expect to see a skeleton. RIP.

I knew Raphtalia wouldn't kill the pig for some reason like I won't become like you or something, but that pig just fell from the window lmao, but didn't die and ended up unleashing a dinosaur, damn.

And looks like next episode is going to be based on Filo. It looks like it's going to be hard to fight this dinosaur. I wonder when everyone will get class upgrades. But considering their is that good nobel and Melty with Naofumi, Raphtalia and Filo, it could be possible to defeat the dinosaur.

5/5 episode. Though this was a very cliched episode and some things were predictable like Raphtalia's friend is gonna be dead. Still I liked this episode a lot.

The bad news is the bastard released a sealed monster to kill the "devil." When monsters are sealed instead of destroyed, they are sealed for a reason. 99% of the time the reason is they can't be destroyed. At least he got flattened.
If you are going to disagree with me, don't bother talking to me. I will seriously hurt you!

I know i'm late to the party here but one of the things that piss me off more than literally anything is when they have a POS guy and they let him live like that. like WTF?
She should have just killed him on the spot. fucking ridiculous. at least torture him and cut his dick off.

Sad situation for Raphtalia, despite her appearance Raphtalia is still technically a 10-year old which makes seeing her friends corpse extra sad.
